Seven And A Half Free Support Ideas To Protect Your Computer.

By:

Before buying or investing in any internet security software read our guide to the sensible approach to protecting yourself from unwanted visitors on your systems,
1.Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly (http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates) Windows Me, 2000,XP. Vista and 7 users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.

2.Install a personal firewall, malware protection and virus protection. A perfectly good free version of such a programme can be found on Microsoft"s website at (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials)

3.Block pop-up spam messages in Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program). Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them. Later versions of Windows have it built into Internet Explorer.

4.Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Passwords should have at least eight characters; use letters and numbers and have at least one symbol. A good example would be p@55W0rd. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.

5.If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version or one with the Outlook Security Update installed. The update and current versions patch numerous vulnerabilities. This can be found on Microsoft Website (http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials)

6.If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features: Use MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the biggest key you can get.

7.Be sceptical of things on the Internet. Don't assume that e-mail "From:" a particular person is actually from that person until you have further reason to believe it's that person. Don't assume that an attachment is what it says it is. Don't give out your password to anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support."
7.5 You are the best protection against online threats, be careful out there, you need to know that there are organised crime syndicates that are ready and waiting for you to make a mistake, click the wrong link, read the wrong email, install the wrong software. Ultimately it is up to you, and even with all the best anti-whatever software in the world installed on your computer it cannot protect you from yourself.
If you need a security assessment or help installing any of the above measures a rather neat company called www.telephone-support.net can do all of this remotely for you. In fact they can help with almost any computer issue from protecting your computer to Microsoft Office telephone support, all from the comfort of your own home.
