Getting slim and trim is slowly taking over as the modern American dream. This is unsurprising considering the disturbing numbers of Americans currently battling obesity. Unfortunately, when it comes to losing those unwanted pounds, dieting failure is often lurking around the corner. New Years Eve resolutions to do something proactive usually fail before the end of February. Although it is sometimes hard to pinpoint the exact reason for failure, often the mistakes made can be traced back to one common denominator: a sheer lack of motivation.

Even the most committed of individuals cannot keep cheerleading for themselves for an extended period of time. Sometimes the enthusiasm lags when it comes to facing the many temptations that are all around us in modern life. There is certainly more involved in losing weight than simply running on a treadmill and staying away from fried food delights.

We may discover that dieting is tough work, side-stepping temptations at every street corner, a lack of support, and often a lack of understanding about the process and how to do it in the most effective way. There are no guarantees that we will be able to totally eliminate these dangers, but spending some time setting ourselves up for success before we embark on our weight loss journey is really important.

Beating ourselves up over minor failures is not productive and we should avoid it at all costs.

- There are various tools that we can get hold of that will help us out along the way. Whilst there are a lot of relatively useless products on the market there are certainly some that may help us on the road to safe weight loss. If walking is our preferred means of exercise it is really important to invest in a good pair of shoes designed for the purpose. A pedometer is useful, but not essential, to keep track of distances. Dietary supplements and extra vitamins may be useful but check with your health professional before spending money on these. We should never use cheap quality equipment or generic supplements for the sake of saving a few pennies- chances are that these sort compromises early on are definitely not going to set us up for success.

- A journal or notebook is very useful for keeping a record of daily food intake and exercise. It is also a good place to record our successes.

These suggestions do not guarantee weight loss success, but they will go a long way towards dodging failure and yet another yoyo diet. Regularly evaluating what we are doing to make sure that it is compatible with our lifestyle is important in maintaining the motivation we need to continue on our journey towards permanent weight loss. If we detect problems we should change things as we proceed rather than holding on to things that are not working for us.
