Senior Flight In Fairfield County

By:

Elected local officials in towns including Darien, New Canaan, and Wilton decided to take steps to address the issue of senior flight in Fairfield County by asking for help from state legislators and implementing better programs for social services. Thousands of senior residents, particularly those aged 65 and up, are leaving Connecticut every year.

Fairfield County had already expanded tax relief programs for its seniors in the 90s, and is currently reexamining proposed changes to these programs. One change that will hopefully take effect is an increase in tax credits for seniors who qualify based on their income brackets. Officials in the county are dismayed at the phenomenon of senior flight and are looking for viable measures that will help senior residents stay at home. They say that it makes good financial sense for seniors to stay, as home sales to young families can result in more expenses used for children's education, as well as the need for additional school facilities to address an increase in school population. Oftentimes, these costs are bigger than how much property taxes these families pay.

Other areas in Fairfield have commissioned reports and studies to help determine the reasons for the migration of seniors, which include returning to their hometowns, moving to places with more agreeable climate, and living in areas near the homes of other family members. A good percentage of all seniors who leave do so to avoid paying high taxes.

Senator Toni Boucher says that 8,000 to 9,000 residents leave Connecticut per year, because the tax burden can be difficult to cope with - this concern is even more difficult for seniors who usually survive on fixed incomes. As a result, many of the state's elderly residents move to areas without income taxes or estate taxes, although the move may not always be beneficial when other costs or expenses specific to the new area are considered.
