Communication has always been important throughout Time and the evolution of language was one means of communication. However in bygone years it was sometimes difficult to communicate, to send messages as it relied upon man and beast years ago. Anyone who has seen the classic westerns in the cinema or on television will know about the Pony Express, a man riding through the night with important correspondence.

While elements of the story may not be accurate, the modern day marathon over a distance just in excess of twenty four miles is attributed to the run that a Greek, Pheidippides, undertook to tell the Athenians that they had won a great victory over Persia at Marathon.

There were none of the modern techniques for sending information quickly. Athenians would have loved to have been able to send big files but these were ancient days.

Even in those days, horseback was more conventional but the story goes that Pheidippides ran the distance, collapsing and dying after informing the citizens of Athens about the victory. That run had been preceded by runs to Sparta and back requesting assistance; two days and a total distance ten times that of the Marathon run.

The years saw all types of innovation though it was only relatively recently that anything other than man and beast were involved. The telegraph fax and telephone all moved things forward but the accurate transmission of messages and authentic documentation is a fairly modern concept. Once the fax came into common use, documents and photographs were regularly sent through from person to person, company to company but these communications lacked legal status as their authenticity could not be guaranteed.

While individuals and businesses now have widespread access to the internet and e mail, it is such a recent thing in the scale of things. Companies wishing to send big files can now do so in an instant. The days of courier services being the only means of important business information and documentation being whisked around the World are over. Every department in a company can receive and send documentation at the press of a button, whatever their geographical location.

The World is now such a small place that everyone expects instant access. There is instant access to news around the world, sporting events are shown live from across the Globe, the only limiting factor being the time difference that no one can do anything about. Instant access has been available via telephone for years; it is available now with video conferencing reducing the need for air travel for executives. It is now available by the use of the internet and everyone now wonders how they ever survived without it and yet they did. Perhaps it was just that the pace of life was just that little bit slower and our expectation levels just that little bit lower.
