Selecting Your Climbing Rope Made Easy

By:

The climbing rope is invaluable to arborists, hunters, firefighters, mountaineers, electricians, and many more. To suit these varied range of needs, manufacturers have come up with such a wide variety of options, that you would be spoilt for choice. However, in this article I would stick only to options that are preferred for climbing as hobby.

Climbing Rope to Mount Mixed Terrain

Mountain climbing requires ropes that are durable (for heavy duty use) to offer you utmost reliability in diverse situations. Always get a single rope for this purpose that has been dry treated properly. However, if you are planning to use routes that require rappels that it is suggested that you select a single rope in combination with a lighter, narrower haul line. You may also use half or twin ropes in such situations. Please take into consideration weight factors in such cases. It is always good to use a climbing rope that is about 50 meters or even less in this kind of situations, so that the extra length of the rope does not make handling more cumbersome and add to the overall weight.

Climbing on Ice Routes and Glaciers

The climbing rope required in this kind of situation is different. Here you would need a longer rope- one that is about 60 meters or even longer. This is because these terrains are smoother and hence you can run out longer pitches with fewer delayed stances. This saves you time and also allow for smoother and consistent climbing.
For glacier travelling, you should go with a half rope. This saves ample weight handling and you can also get a rope that is strong enough for your purpose. Moreover, always go for dry treated ones for better results.

Climbing Waterfall Ice

All types of climbing ropes viz. single, double, and twin rope are used in this type of climbing. While the single variety is suited for straight climbing routes, double and twin rope technique is used more frequently in ice climbing. The reason for this, lie in the fact that these systems are more redundant (which is required for sharp edges in ice climbing). Wherever rope you use it is important that these rope go through dry treatment for safe and easy climbing.

Rock Climbing

The selection of ropes in rock climbing is different in different situations. When there is no leading, then a static rope is the best bet. Again, when you have to choose one for sport climbing then using a long nylon rope (60 meter) is a good idea. Medium durability and weight are the factors that you should look out for climbing rope.
Choose your rope carefully for a safe and enjoying climbing expedition. The same applies to dock line. Happy choosing!
