Seizures In Dogs And What You Can Do

By:

Seizures in dogs occur somewhat frequently to the horror of their owners. While it can be quite shocking and nobody wants to go through it, seizures are very rarely fatal and preventative measures can be taken to ensure the health of your dog. Every pet owner should be well read on possible health problems so they are prepared if their pet falls ill.

Many dogs go through episodes that seem like seizures but they are actually not. To be able to make the distinction one must be informed on what a normal seizure looks like. If you notice that your dog has been overcome by a sense of panic, there may be a seizure brewing, as he can sense what is happening. Then the animal starts shuddering and is unable to orient himself. Often times the dog falls to one side and shivers fiercely, sometimes foaming at the mouth. The breathing will also become difficult or stop altogether.

Many dogs exhibit strange behavioral patterns like appearing to run while lying down in their sleep. Other dogs may faint from time to time or lose the ability to balance. We must not mistake these for seizures. If something like this occurs, check the state of awareness of your dog. If he appears to recognize you and his surrounding, he is not experiencing a seizure.

Just as humans receive genetic disorders passed down from their parents, dogs do as well. Epilepsy is genetic and it is the most probable reason that a dog may experience a seizure. Dogs with this condition should not be used for breeding. There are other reasons that dogs experience seizures and prevention in those cases may be a bit easier.

Toxins can lead to seizures and the most common is lead poising. This can be caused by ingestion of a number of household items. Inhalation of car exhaust and industrial pollution are also causative factors. Even the flea collars and sprays that we think are good for our dogs are actually toxic and can lead to such problems.

A dog with unhealthy liver or kidneys can experience a number of health problems, including seizures. Worms in the intestines also release toxins that could cause one. Vitamin deficiencies cause attacks in some cases as well. Regular visits to the vet are essential in order to understand and prevent these problems.

When a dog first appears to be having a seizure the owner may administer a small amount of honey to boost his sugar level which will then reduce the intensity of the attack. The most important thing an owner can do is remain calm and create a safe environment for the dog. Normal, healthy dogs do not need immediate medical attention following the episode but if the dog is very young or a lactating bitch it must be brought to emergency care. All dogs need a prompt visit to the vet after.

Seizures in dogs are a reality but have the potential to be greatly reduced in frequency. A dog that eats healthily, exercises regularly, and does not consume toxins runs a lower risk and has more potential for overall good health. Lastly, a loving home is often one of the best preventative measures.
