Secure Your Garden This Summer

By:

With summer fast approaching we are all looking forward to long days spent outside in our back yards, but we aren't alone. Every summer, hundreds of opportunist thieves steal anything that we happen to have left outdoors.

Barbecues, lawn mowers and even garden furniture have become the most common items to be taken in backyard burglaries. So what can we, as home owners do to protect our valuables over summer?

The first and most obvious way that we can make sure that we don't become yet another crime statistic is to put away all that can be stored. While it's tempting to leave the lawn mower out or to leave putting the barbecue away till tomorrow (especially if we have had a beer or three), these are two of the most commonly stolen garden items. It only takes minutes to put these things away and when you think of all the paper work that needs to be filled out when reporting a crime to the police and insurance company, it's well worth that little bit of effort.

The second way that you can deter any potential thief is to invest in a set of gates for your garden. This doesn't need to be expensive and this is a common sense tip which is currently being issued by the police.

Most thieves are opportunistic and so the theory goes that if they can see an unguarded lawn mower or maybe a bike left unlocked they will take the chance to steal it because they can be fairly sure that nobody is around and the risk of them getting caught is significantly reduced, however by installing a side gate on your property, this means that it isn't so easy to see who or what is in the back yard. For all they know there could be a party in progress or even worse, a pack of hungry German Shepherds.

The second big advantage of gating the rear of your property is the added bonus of complete privacy from anyone walking past on the street. With so many unknown and undesirable elements in communities today, it is only when you truly shut yourself off from the outside that a lot of people are truly able to relax and enjoy their gardens.

While there is an initial cost associated to fitting gates to your property, a good, robust set will last you over ten years and will keep your family and property safe year after year.
