Secrets Of Caring For Dry Skin

Secrets Of Caring For Dry Skin

By:

Nothing looks quite as obvious on our faces as a patch of dry skin and fortunately it is very easy to treat and keep at bay. The causes of dry skin are numerous, as we will see, but treatment these days is affordable and very effective for most people.

The dry skin that many of us find developing can be caused by different factors and so should be look after with specific procedures to get the most effective solution. There are also preventative measures we can take, and there's a whole moisturising industry to take care of that side of things. To add a little confusion there are many varieties and levels of dryness, and it affects various people in different ways. The point at which it becomes a problem usually depends on one of two factors: appearance and pain or discomfort.

When skin dries, it can appear blotchy or dark pink, and dead skin can be generated more quickly, causing flakes which will start to appear on clothes. While some people are happy to put up with that, the point at which it can actually become unpleasant or cause pain is usually the factor that makes them seek intervention. The reason for the pain is that healthy, naturally moisturised skin normally flexible ans supple, but dry skin is more taut and rigid, meaning normal movements can cause discomfort as we move, stretch, smile or even just change position. In more advanced cases elasticity can be so reduced that the skin simply breaks and can even start to bleed. A common manifestation of this problem is chapped lips.

Dry skin can be casued by external factors as well as by conditions under the skin. Our diet and water intake are important factors, and keeping healthy that way can check most normal dry skin complaints. Other times our natural production of moisturising oils is too low or we have got a medical condition, in which case it's best to seek professional attention. It is important to follow a well thought out routine when it comes to avoiding sun issues, too, as it plays a big part in general skin damage, be it on one a hot sunny day or as a build-up of exposure during our lifetimes. When it's dazzling, keep covered up and use good quality factor 50 in other words, think long-term. And what's the opposite of sunshine? Yes, coldness. Going out in winter can also dry out the skin thanks to low humidity. (Keep an eye on the weather forecast, because there plenty of perfectly safe days too lap it up!)

With all these possible reasons, it's no wonder moisturising creams and lotions are big business. But one of the reasons that they are so successful is that they do achieve great results as part of a dry skin care routine. Anita Roddick, the lady who started the Body Shop, once admitted that skin care moisturisers may be the only cosmetics that really work. She may have had a vested interest as her company was producing these products at the time, but coming from someone who was making millions selling all manner of cosmetics, it's quite telling.

There is little doubt that good moisturisers that contain not only hydrating agents but also ingredients such as sun block do add up to rounded ways of keeping skin from drying out and maintaining a younger-looking, healthier complexion.
