Screw The Bolts: Screws Often Mistaken As Bolts

Lag bolts are actually screws that are often mistaken for bolts because of its large size. These "bolts" or lag screws are normally used for securing two pieces of woods together. These mechanical connections between two parts of objects ensure that the objects are secured. They are often used to fasten huge wood beams and wood posts usually designed for decks, wooden bridges and other structures made of wood. Lag bolts can be directly screwed into wood beams or posts or any other wooden material. These fasteners or bolts have a large wide head. The bolts or screws are hard to tighten or loosen but it can be managed quickly applying torque to the head with a tool. The large hexagonal head protrudes so it is easily rotated with a box wrench or ratchet for a more effective tightening. They have to penetrate two pieces of wood material being secured to each other and produces an extreme degree of tightness when two wood materials are joined together. The joining parts resist the force being applied while embedding the lag bolt thus preventing loosening for long periods of time. Selecting the correct size of screw to be used should be based on the thickness of the two adjoining wooden parts.

These specialized industrial connectors come in a variety of threads and sizes. Lag bolts are manufactured with the use of different materials for specific applications or projects. The most common types of lag bolts or lag screws produced by manufacturers are the zinc plated lag bolts, and the hot dipped galvanized steel coating. Galvanized lag bolts are highly recommended for use in coastal regions. All of these are reasonably priced considering the purity of metals used and various treatments that make it as strong and sturdy as possible. If a higher corrosion resistance is required for large wood and concrete buildings and other constructions such as boats that are often exposed to water and weather, a highly corrosion resistant material is used such as stainless steel or silicone bronze.

So before starting your project, make sure to determine the type of lag bolts you need like Silicone-bronze bolts that are typically used for fastening wood timbers together, determine the sizes of the bolts by lining up the wood materials and measuring it and lastly, drill a pilot hole on every location of the lag bolts on wood materials for easy tightening and greater accuracy.
