Scart cables were originally invented in France. It's a standard with French origins. The cables have 21 pins and are used for connecting audio visual equipment to other audio visual equipment. These cables are very common in Europe. They're common to the point that some companies actually refer to them as EuroSCART. Generally in other parts of the world the cables are not used nearly as much. The cables use analogue content. The cables were a standard in the European area for a long time. More recently, more digital cables have become competitors, such as HDMI.

The year 1977 was the first time a Scart lead appeared. These connectors were used in TVs in France. The country of France actually made them mandatory to be used with all television sets just a few years later. There was a problem when it came to television sets before the use of these cables was common. There was no real set way to connect TVs together. Scart provided a standardized method that made connections easier. Before Scart, different pieces of equipment with different manufacturers may have not been compatible with one another.

The entire point of Scart cables when they were first introduced was to make connections between pieces of equipment much easier. Over the years, this came to include not only televisions, but also video recording devices, disc playing devices, and even different kinds of game consoles. The advantage was that one cable could be used for all of these purposes. Having to use different cables for different purposes is frustrating and inefficient. Using just one cable allows people to save time and money, which always helps with the bottom line in profits, so it was good for everyone all around.

A Scart cable is often still needed in certain situations. This is because if a VCR or other type of video device doesn't have more modern jacks, then a Scart type cable may be needed instead. It's often too expensive to try using converters for Scart video. This can also lead to a loss in quality. Cables with Scart are still around, though they may often be old. Using the cables when other options don't exist is certainly a reasonable thing to do to avoid buying extra converters. But overall, other cables offer better quality. This is due to innovations in the video field over the last thirty years, which have pushed forward new technologies.
