Saving Energy With A Thermostat

By:

Saving energy can be a huge help during the extreme months of high or low temperatures. Many consumers are slammed with huge energy bills during these months because it is difficult to keep their home comfortable. With a programmable thermostat, however, you can save a lot of money on your energy bill while still maintaining a comfortable home.

What is a Thermostat?

A thermostat is a mechanism that allows consumers to regulate the temperature within their home. Your HVAC system is controlled by the thermostat that is found on one of the walls in your home. When you set the temperature on the thermostat, a signal is sent to the furnace and air conditioner to maintain that desired temperature in the home by heating or cooling the house. A thermometer in the thermostat detects the indoor temperature and makes the HVAC system stop heating or cooling the indoor air.

Energy Efficient Thermostats

If you want to save money on your energy bill each month, you might consider purchasing an energy efficient thermostat that will help you make reasonable decisions in how frequently you run your HVAC system. An energy efficient thermostat is a thermostat that can be digitally programmed to turn on and off at different times during the day. So, when you are away from your home, at school, or at work, you can arrange to have your thermostat shut the heater or air conditioner off for the duration of the day so that you can save money.

Similarly, during the night when you are already asleep, you can program the thermostat to turn your HVAC system off so that you do not waste energy during the night. A programmable thermostat can be a huge asset in your quest to save money on your energy bill each month. You can even preprogram your thermostat if you are taking a vacation and want to minimally heat or cool your home while you are away.

Thermostat Guidelines

Your thermostat can be adjusted to suit your personal preferences, but it is important to remember that the more heated or cooled air you pump into your home during extreme temperatures, the more money you are going to have to pay in your energy usage bill. An energy efficient thermostat may help you regulate the operation of your HVAC system, but it will not make your heating and cooling decisions for you. You have to be reasonable when you set your thermostat and formulate good habits as far as heating your home in the winter and cooling your home in the summer is concerned.

If you set your thermostat on 65 degrees in the hot summer months, you can expect to have a huge energy bill during those months. Instead of using a thermostat to totally control the air temperature in your home, consider using other energy saving devices. Install insulation around doors and windows to prevent air from escaping into the atmosphere or seeping into your home. During the winter, light a fire in your fireplace and wear layered clothing to stay warm. By using your thermostat wisely and using other energy saving methods during the months of extreme temperature, you can save a lot of money on your energy bills.
