Save Money With Diy Repairs

By:

Many people don't consider them the DIY type, preferring to pay professionals good money to take care of various jobs for them. However, labor costs often end up costing more than the jobs' materials. You could save a lot of money just by completing your own home repairs.

Common Jobs

One of the most common and regular home repairs is the dreaded room repainting. While the paint itself might only cost $40 or $50, a professional paint crew can easily cost hundreds more on top of that. If you're willing to roll up your sleeves, take a Saturday afternoon, and brave the fumes for a few hours, you can paint your entire house for a fraction of the cost.

Granted, the above scenario is one of the more extreme examples of how much you can save through DIY repairs since paint is generally quite cheap. Replacing electrical outlets also costs very little in the way of materials, but hiring an electrician to come out to your house and install the new outlets costs hundreds more.

Making Your Home More Efficient

DIY repairs save not only on labor costs but energy costs as well. Heating, cooling, and lighting costs account for the majority of each utility bill, but small investments can pay big dividends each year. Old exterior doors can leak cool air out in the summer and hot air out in the winter, exposing your home to different temperatures, moisture, and even small critters. Installing a new door seal is cheaper than purchasing a new door and works almost as well. You'll be more comfortable, and your utility bills should be lower each month.

Old water heaters use poor quality or no insulation at all, and they can account for up to 20% of your home's energy needs. A water heater jacket is easy to install, only costs about $15, and significantly reduces how much heat escapes from your tank.

Some jobs, such as installing new windows, require expertise and tools beyond that of the normal homeowner, but there are still plenty of DIY home repairs you can complete to save on energy bills. Don't pay hundreds of dollars in labor costs just for pure convenience. You can take those savings and turn them into even more repairs.
