Save Money On Your Bath Remodel

By:

As I learned when I lived in San Diego, bathroom remodeling can quickly turn into more than you bargained for. If you don't have gobs of money, and especially if you aren't planning to be in the home for very long, there is no reason to undertake an expensive remodeling project.

I lived in a house in California for about two years. I absolutely hated the bathroom, but I knew I was only going to be there for a short time and didn't want to spend an abundance of money on my San Diego home bathroom remodel. Here are some tricks I learned to keep a remodel relatively simple and cost-effective.

Instead of setting your mind on a custom shower, think about fusing tile with a poly shower pan or purchasing a shower unit that is pre-fabricated. Either option will save you time and money. My San Diego bath had only a few cracks and discolorations, but it was enough to bother me. So instead of purchasing a new unit, I refinished the bathtub. If you know how or are willing to learn, you easily do your own repairs. For example, installing a toilet is much simpler than you might think. Don't hire a plumber; do it yourself. There are plenty of online sites that will show you how.

On that note, don't hire a painter either. With the mirror, shower, vanity, and toilet taking up room, there is not a lot of wall space in a bathroom. Paint it yourself. Pick a fun color to go with a new decor theme or install some wainscoting. You'll be amazed at what a difference a new coat of paint will do, even if it's white!

While it's tempting to buy radiant-heat granite flooring, fight the urge. You don't need it or the expense. Vinyl will do fine, again, especially if you aren't going to be around for long. Above all, don't move the plumbing! That is what makes an innocent bathroom remodeling project turn into an expensive nightmare. Unless you are planning to own the home for years and years or need to sell it at a much higher price, don't even think about going there.

Remodeling on a budget may not be very glamorous but it can certainly keep you sane and provide you with a clean, new bathroom in the process.
