Save Money On Heating Bills - Find Out Why You Should Switch To A Cast Iron Stove

By:

If you have an open fire in your home, you are wasting a lot of money on fuel. Maybe its time to think about switching to a cast iron stove and start saving on heating costs.

While conventional open fires have always been a centrepiece in many rooms, many people are now converting to cast iron stoves, primarily because they are far more economic to run than using open fires. In this article we explain why you could save money by switching to a cast iron stove to replace the open fire your home.

There is something comforting about sitting around a fireplace on a cold, damp night. We tend to light a fire because the moving flames provides us with a sense of warmth, and it is this visual effect that makes us feel warmer rather than the meagre amount of heat that an open fire actually contributes to the overall temperature of the room. Indeed, open fires are notoriously inefficient for 2 reasons.

1.Open fires waste heat.
In a typical open fire, burning wood, coal or turf, up to 80% of the heat is lost up the chimney, leaving a miserly 20% of the heat to warm the house. Such an inefficient method of heating means that you are literally burning money.

2.Open fires waste fuel.
An open fire burns at a lower temperature than sealed-in fires. This means that the fire does not reach temperatures high enough to completely burn all the fuel, so that some of the fuel you have paid for is not really burned at all.

So how can you get the benefits of a real fire, yet still save on heating costs?

One solution is to look at using cast iron stoves in place of an open fire.

Reputable manufacturers make stoves to strict quality levels of construction and efficiency, as well as being attractive decor features in their own right. But, more importantly, stoves are replacing the open fires as the heating method of choice simply because they will save you money.

With a stove you get a much greater amount of heat from the same amount of fuel. The fire is effectively sealed behind the glass doors, which means that much more of the heat generated by the fire is trapped and can be used to heat the room. In fact, good quality stoves can operate at up to 80% efficiency for the amount of useful heat generated.

Also, because the fire is enclosed, the actual temperature of the fire in stoves rises much higher than in an open fire, and when the fire burns hotter, much more of the fuel will be consumed to generate more heat, while producing less waste.

With quality cast iron stoves, you can have all the comforting visual effects of a real fire, while you benefit from the much greater heat output of a very efficient heating system. Why not switch to a stove and start saving money instead of literally watching it go up in smoke.
