Save Money Budgeted For Truck Parts By Retreading Tires

By:

Buying commercial truck parts can be a very expensive part of owning and running your own trucking business. Tires are among the regular maintenance costs that can mount up. Many companies are taking advantage of retreading tires to extend the life of the tire and cut down on costs for truck parts and maintenance..

Conditions Required for Retread

When a tire receives a lot of miles, the tread on the surface of the tire is the first to go. If two conditions are met with worn out tires, they may be able to receive a new tread. First, the tire cannot be worn so thin that it is worn down to the cords. If cords are showing, the tire is too old and needs to be discarded. The second condition is that the casing of the tire is still in good condition.

Process of Retreading

If these two conditions are met with the tires, then they can be retreaded. When a tire is retreaded, the surface of the tire is filed down until it is smooth. After the tire is filed, it is smaller than it was before. This is important because when the new rubber is put on the tire, the tire increases in size, yet, the tires need to remain a standard size.

After the tire is filed, a new slab or rubber is welded to the old casing. The next step is to heat the rubber so it is pliable and treads are put into the tire.

Durability of Tire

Once a tire is recapped, it is in good condition. Retreaded tires can last as long as a new tire before a new cap is needed. The casing on a tire can be capped four different times. When a tire throws a cap and leaves its tread in the middle of the freeway, the casing is worn out. At that time, a new tire is needed.

Location of Capped Tires

One rule to always abide by is to never, never run a retreaded tire, or even a repaired tire for that matter, as a steering tire. If fact, it is sound practice to remove steering tires when they are worn down about 50 percent and replace them with new tires.

Otherwise, the other thing to remember is to run the retreaded tire as part of a set with about the same amount of wear on the tread.

By following these procedures, you can save money on budget allocated to truck parts.
