Save Considerably - Compare Energy Prices

By:

If you are a home owner, there is little doubt that you are doing whatever you can in order to save money. The poor economy of the past couple of years is making it more and more difficult for many of us to manage our home budgets due to prices rising across the board.

One area that many people fail to look at as a possible way to save money is that of their energy costs. We often are guilty of becoming rather complacent concerning what energy companies we use, and often simply out of habit.

Over the past few years we have seen a significant increase in home energy costs. It is therefore a great idea to ask around a bit to see what other people you know are paying for energy, so that you can compare energy prices between different providers. Talk to co-workers, family members and some friends. This will give you a good idea if you are indeed paying too much for your gas or electricity.

Once you have a general idea of your costs compared to those of people you know, you should take it a step further and use the Internet for a bit of good old fashioned comparison. Consumer apathy toward energy prices is beginning to wane, and therefore there are many new websites up and running that are dedicated to allowing visitors to compare prices between different energy providers.

Some of these online comparison sites will ask you to enter your post code. Once entered you will be presented with a form that you should fill out which will ask you your current supplier, current tariff and your normal method of payment. You can also be expected to be asked to enter your usage amount and costs that you currently pay. Once submitted and processed, you will see a list of prices and supplies available to you.

Many of the best sites will allow you to change supplies right on the site and once done, you will be subscribed to the supplier you have chosen. Keep in mind the fact that when you change a gas or electricity supplier the changes often do not take effect until the beginning of the month.

A feature to look for when choosing an energy comparison website is that of customer testimonials. There is often no better source for accurate information about a service than from the actual consumers themselves.

You can also check online articles and press releases of different companies before making any changes. Keep an eye out for information in magazines, newspapers and advertisements as well. Many smaller energy providers often advertise in local newspapers and offer some great rates for new customers in order to compete against large monopolies.

Remember that when you compare energy prices, that most providers offer some special capped tariffs. This means that if you select a cap, you will get locked into a rate for a specified period of time, meaning that you would not be affected by price hikes during that period. These tariffs are very appealing to those who are unsure that they can handle further price increases.
