San Francisco Places You Must See

A visit to San Francisco is incomplete without visiting some of the most famous San Francisco tourist attractions. Here is a list of a few must-see places you must explore on your next visit during your next trip to San Francisco.

Golden Gate Bridge

A visit to San Francisco is definitely incomplete if you have not seen the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge. It was constructed in year 1937 and its total length is 8,891 feet. It was one the largest suspension bridge in the world by the time it was completed and nearly eleven people died during its construction.

Before the construction of Golden Gate Bridge, the only way to go cross the San Francisco Bay was through ferries. The congestion caused by the ferries on the bay area inspired engineer Joseph Strauss to build this splendid bridge which proved to be infinite help till today.

From southern side the best places to take photos are Baker beach, Fort Point and Lincoln Avenue. From the northern side, the best places for taking photos are Fort Baker and Marin Headlands. Take a walk on these places and explore the real beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco Cable Cars

Cable Cars of San Francisco were designated as National Historic Landmark in year 1964. They operate on all days of the week along century-old routes. The first cable street car service started in year 1873 and the cost of building the cable car system was about $85,150. However, today the tickets can be bought for just $3 each way. You can also chose to buy one day pass which let you ride the cars for the entire day for unlimited number of rides.

Generally, there are 2 sets of cable cars: Powell-Dixie, the Powell-Mason and the California line. Some stops among them are Nob Hill, Aquatic Park, Ghirardelli Square and Fishermans Wharf. California line goes through Nob Hill, China Town and Financial District.

Alcatraz Island
Who thought that touring a former prison could become so popular?

Alcatraz Island is hardly few miles off the San Franciscos coast and was used a military prison in 1907 and then as a federal prison in 1930s. Some of the famous prisoners include George Kelly (Bank robber and kidnaper) and Chicago Mob Boss Al Capone.

Alcatraz Island was incorporated into National Parks system in year 1973 and finally it became a tourist attraction.

Union Square

If shopping is on your mind, you should visit Union Square, one of the most astounding shopping areas of the nation. Some of the best features of Union Square are huge central plaza, having 4 entrance corners decorated by magnificent palm trees and caf pavilions with outdoor seating. Its a magnificent attraction which gives one opportunity to shop, meet new people and see shows. It is also a home to San Franciscos prime theater district. There are also several art galleries worth visiting.

Chinatown

Chinatown is situated near to North Beach and is roughly bounded by Bush Street and Grant Avenue. It is home to the second largest community of Chinese people in the US after New York. Stockton and Grant are the two main streets of Chinatown. Have a glimpse of magnificent gates of Chinatown especially the one at the southern entrance. You can also see Golden Gate Fortune Cookies Factory and watch out how delicious cookies are made and even buy some. For delicious Chinese tea flavors, visit Ten Ren Tea Shop.

Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is simply amazing. You can easily spend one full day at Golden Gate Park. You can go there and enjoy a peaceful walk in the arms of natural and scenic beauty or simply sit and have fun all day. However, if you love to explore, theres definitely a lot to explore, like The Strybing Arboretum, seventy acres of gardens with trails, redwoods, blooming trees, flowers, herbs and duck ponds. Then theres also Spreckles Lake and Bison paddock.

Lombard Street

Lombard Street is also known as crooked street as it slopes down like a snake. It is one of its kind in the world. a beautiful street. It was constructed this way so as that cars could pass easily while going down the steep slope. Adding to it, the picturesque landscape of the street makes it a must-see in San Francisco.

Fishermans Wharf

Fishermans Wharf is definitely one of the most popular destinations of San Francisco. It overlooks Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. The renowned waterfront serves some of the fresh sea foods at area restaurants. Some nearby attractions are Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square and The Cannery.

Per 39 is full of fine restaurants, shopping stores, Aquarium of the bay and performance artists. It is one such place which promises ultimate fun and great seafood.
