On October 9, 2010, a total of 22 sailors took the Oath of Allegiance during a special
naturalization ceremony aboard the Navy aircraft carrier USS George Washington. A two member team from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Bangkok District Office headed straight out to sea to preside over the ceremony. The team included the Deputy Director of USCIS Stacy Strong and the USCIS Overseas Adjudication Officer, Gary Remmel.
The two U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials presided over the naturalization ceremony and conducted immigration training to the ships legal staff and crew. The officials of the U.S. Immigration Services boarded the ship two days prior to the naturalization ceremony with an aim to interview the citizenship candidates.
Not only did the higher authorities interview the citizenship candidates, but also carried out the naturalization test. In addition, they also coordinated with the sailors on board to aid them to begin the citizenship process. Such critical steps taken by the
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to speed up the naturalization process for the members of the military has generated considerable interest among the sailors on board to start the citizenship process.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services through its extensive outreach would definitely keep the members of Americas armed forces and their families regularly updated about the immigration services and benefits affirmed Deputy Director Strong. She also confirmed that USCIS was committed to extend support to all sailors on land as well as at sea.
The 22 citizens who were naturalized belonged to China, Colombia, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, and Thailand.
