Safety Jackets

If you work on or near construction sites or transportation zones you must have a safety jacket! The American National Standards Institute or ANSI has recommended Classes 1, 2 or 3 reflective jackets based on the work classification of the wearer. Jackets are available in various styles. Jackets are made of high visibility colors such as orange, yellow or bright green. Reflective trim is of a retro reflective material and will be in different widths depending on the jacket required for the job. There are hi viz jackets and reflective jackets. Safety jackets should be purchased based on your specific job.

The first category of jackets is worn by parking service attendants, shopping cart retrievers, warehouse workers that work on loading docks or near minor traffic areas, and those working on sidewalks or driveways. Workers should choose jackets that have reflective material of at 1 inch (25mm) in width.

The next category of high viz jackets is for workers such as school crossing guards, airport ground crews, police officers that direct traffic, and railroad workers. The reflective jackets in this category are more visible because the reflective trim on the safety jackets is not less than 1.38 inches (35mm) in width.

The last category of high viz jackets is for maximum visibility. These jackets can more easily be seen in poor weather conditions such as fog, rain, or snow. These high viz jackets are recommended for high speed traffic zones. The width of the reflective trim should be at least 2 inches (50mm) wide. In addition these jackets have sleeves with reflective material. Workers who choose these jackets are construction workers, emergency responders, and utility workers.

Jackets are available in many styles and sizes. Different weights of material for various weather conditions can be selected. Jackets are available in sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve versions. Jackets can be purchased with simple trim or with additional geometric shapes in relective material. Names and logos can also be added to jackets.

Safety jackets are required in many locations to protect workers from the dangers of traffic. The retroflective trim and bright fabric used make the wearer more visible to others. Buy the appropriate safety jacket for your job and wear it!
