Safe Sleeping Practices For Your Baby

By:

One of the first things your baby would tell you if they could talk would be how much they enjoy sleeping the majority of the time. This is a necessity for babies during their first months of life, sleeping helps in their early development. But, there can be complications, such as SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) as well as others. These tragedies can be prevented by keeping the baby safe while sleeping.

These mishaps cause to many senseless death's of babies every year. Practicing safe sleeping habits can help reduce these statistics. While still in the hospital, take note on how your baby is put to bed. At home, having a crib set up and ready to go will be the safest place for your baby. Yet, the safety of the crib must be thoroughly inspected prior to placing your precious bundle of joy in it.

To make sure your crib is a safe sleeping environment, first, be sure it is placed in a draft free area. Then a well-fitted cotton sheet on a firm mattress would be next. And always placing your baby on his back since this reduces the risk of suffocation or SIDs.

Babies are often wrapped in to many clothes when the weather is cold. The best thing you can do is to set the room temperature around 68 degrees and put no more clothes on your baby than you would wear. For example, if you are comfortable in a tee shirt, don't put flannels on your baby.

It is best not to dress them too warmly, you don't want to risk over heating your baby. Night clothes should fit well, they should not be loose. All excess items such as caps, jewelry, bibs, etc. should never be worn to bed.

Many times movies will show babies sleeping with stuffed animals or a bed filled with toys. This is not a safe sleeping condition. The movie may depict this, but in the real world this is dangerous. The crib should not contain any toys, pillows, blanket or other items. The reality is your baby can get caught up in this items and suffocate.

Pacifiers are often given to babies by their mothers or fathers. There is a belief among doctors that they may help to prevent SIDS. The correct size should be chosen for the baby's age. Personally I would use an orthodontic pacifier. They are made with the idea of reducing overbites as baby develops. Make sure there is nothing attached to the pacifier such as ribbon. This is dangerous because it could cause the baby to strangle or choke.

At times parents may have their baby sleep on their bed. This should be avoided, particularly because your baby may roll over and fall off the bed or worse, roll over and suffocate. This also ends up being the choice when visiting friends or relatives. Be sure to plan ahead. Bring your portable playpen, or if nothing else is available use your car seat.

When it comes to your baby, you can never be to safe. These few safe sleeping tips may give you piece of mind and make your baby more comfortable.
