There are a great amount of engineering materials on hand to use in the building of buildings. One of the most exceptional materials used is steel. Steel is used in many aspects of development. A very effective way to use steel is to use within concrete. This is known as reinforced concrete.

Whilst making concrete posts the concrete is poured into a steel mould which is greased first to prevent sticking, then steel fibres are added. The mix is then vibrated to get rid of any excess air in the mixture.

Concrete solidifies and hardens after integration with water and placement due to a chemical process known as hydration. The water reacts with the cement, which bonds the other components together, ultimately making a stone-like material.

Concrete is used to create pavements, pipe, architectural structures, foundations, motorways/roads, bridges/overpasses, parking structures, brick/block walls as well as footings for gates, fences and poles.
Concrete is used more than any other man-made material in the planet.

Reinforced concrete is concrete with steel fibers added inside to give the concrete some movement and some reinforcement. All the major structures of our modern time are using steel within reinforced concrete when making a good quality solid support or foundation, and also in the structural skeleton.

The earliest person to employ these ground-breaking techniques was a gentleman named Joseph Louis Lambot. In the mid-1800s he discovered that thin steel bars or steel fiber concrete can greatly increase the strength of concrete making it better and more compliant to use in a range of applications.

Manufacturers started using the same ways to construct a variety of different structures small and large. At the time there had been a variety of different kinds of concrete goods and builders were more than glad to make use of them however a typical method of production had not yet been developed.

Many companies tried to create enhanced variations of concrete and as with all markets the more revolutionary the company the better it survived. Smaller less equipped companies gradually faded away leaving a a small number of elite bigger companies. The building industry started using reinforced steel concrete all over the globe mostly in Europe in addition to America.

This led to improved and more well-rounded structures and more notably safer structures which could withstand the elements.In 1878, the earliest arrangement in the United States by an American named Thaddeus Hyatt was patented. The refinery's Pacific Coast Borax Company in Alameda, California, was the first structure in the United States, built with this new system. The system became very popular in the early 1900s and soon most of the developers were using the system for building of their steel structures.

An early development was Oriel Chambers in Liverpool. Designed by local architect Peter Ellis in 1864, the structure was the world's first iron-framed, glass curtain-walled office structure. It was only 5 floors high as the elevator had not been invented. Further developments led to the world's first skyscraper, the ten-storey Home Insurance building in Chicago, built in 1884. While its height is not considered very impressive today, it was at that time.

The architect, Major William Le Baron Jenney, created a load-bearing structural frame. In this structure, a steel frame supported the entire weight of the walls, instead of load-bearing walls carrying the weight of the building. This development led to the "Chicago skeleton" form of building.

The process has been refined over the years and has become the foundation of all construction ever since. We are now able to create supersized buildings that can survive the elements in addition to earthquakes. Reinforced steel concrete has been designed to make it bendable when under strain, stopping cracks and breakage.

One of the foremost and most striking structures in that period was the Eiffel Tower.The building was built between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, a World's Fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution.

Eiffel initially planned to assemble the tower in Barcelona intended for the Universal Exposition of 1888, but those responsible at the Barcelona metropolis hall thought it was a odd and high-priced construction, which did not fit into the design of the capital. After the refusal of the Consistory of Barcelona, Eiffel submitted his draft to individuals in charge for the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where he would construct his tower a year later, in 1889. The tower was inaugurated on 31 March 1889, and opened on 6 May.

Three hundred people joined together 18,038 pieces of puddled iron (a very pure form of structural iron), using two and a half million rivets, in astructural design by Maurice Koechlin. The chance of industrial accident was enormous, for unlike new skyscrapers the tower is an open frame devoid of any intermediate floors except the two platforms. In spite of this, because Eiffel took safety precautions, together with the use of movable stagings, guard-rails along with screens, just one guy died.

Blackpool Tower is a tourist destination in the town of Blackpool, Lancashire, in the north of England (grid reference SD306360). The tower is 158 m (518 ft 9 in) tall. It was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. It cost forty two thousand pounds to assemble, and it first opened to the community on 14 May 1894. It is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.Reinforced concrete is used in a number of planning applications including flooring, beams, columns, walls, roofs and extensions.
