Romanticism was widespread in its origin and influence unlike Enlightenment, which started as a small movement among the elite class and spread slowly. Romanticism is well acclaimed for its sheer variety, influence and staying power since the culmination of the middle ages.

Started in the 1770s in Germany and England, it spread all over Europe including the French, who were critical of Romanticism in the early stages. Romantic musical forms also had a global presence and became popular all over in no time. The most popular orchestral music in the world is that of the romantic era. Though it faced a stiff opposition from the formal concert music exponents, this style has reasserted itself as neo romanticism in many a concert halls.

Romanticism brought about drastic changes in painting, sculpture and concert music forms like opera and ballet. It became popular as it served to address the aspirations and hopes of the people and was deeply rooted in the politics of the time. It was considered as the voice of revolution by many when it started in the 19th century and by the end of the century it had become the voice of the Establishment.

While politics and revolution were the stimulation for the artists in other eras, romantics turned to Nature for self-fulfillment. They in a way were endorsing innovative ways for expressing their creativity and they chose to turn away from the values and ideas of the previous era. With more emphasis on personal freedom and self expressions, romanticism was like a whiff of fresh air to the artistic community at that time. Many legendary artists like Rousseau made use of natural elements in their creations. The mountain passes and deep woods became spectacles to rejoice and the violence of the oceans storms became the aesthetic plot for many paintings unlike the earlier European trend that kept nature out of their works. Some of the best known poets in this era include Keats, Percy B. Shelley, William Blake, Lord Byron, William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge among others.

The Romantic period is thought to have ended at the beginning of the Victorian Period with the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837. However throughout the Victorian age the erotic aspects of Romanticism continued to thrive in all art forms. Though Romanticism was not a programmed movement like Enlightenment, it was more successful in changing history and the human traits.
