Risk Factors For Type 2 Diabetes

By:

There are a number of ways of assessing if you are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The Australian government has put together a

risk assessment tool which is made up of a series of questions. This can be viewed at http://www.home-check.net.au/Diabetes.html

People at high risk should be tested annually and include those who:
Are obese
Have a first-degree relative with Diabetes
Are members of a high-risk ethnic population (African, Aboriginal, Arabian, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific-

Islander)
Have delivered a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
Have a history of gestational diabetes
Have a History of vascular disease
Have high blood pressure
Have HDL cholesterol levels 35mg/dl or triglyceride levels 250mg/dl
On previous testing had impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose
All adults older than 45 years of age should test every 3 years.

Symptoms of Diabetes
Most people dont have any symptoms until 10 years into the disease. Therefore it is important to assess your risk (as above) rather

than just look for symptoms. However, here are some common symptoms of Diabetes:
Skin Infections
Frequent Urination
Excessive Thirst/dry mouth
Constant Hunger
Unexplained weight loss
Tingling and numbness in the feet
Blurred Vision
Slow healing
Extreme Fatigue
Breathing Difficulty
Irritability

Reducing the risks of Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes has been linked to lifestyle habits and if corrected, can help to reduce your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes by lowering your glucose levels to a normal range.

Tips to help maintain a healthy lifestyle
Increase your fibre intake
Be active and exercise for 20-30 minutes a day
Maintain a healthy weight range BMI less than 25
Avoid fatty and processed foods
