Rise Of The Friendly Robots

We've all heard the horror stories, felt the terror - the ideas that robots take over the earth and enslave the population. From early science fiction such as Dr Who and Star Trek to modern day movies such as the Matrix, this central theme is present in them all. Fact or fiction? Only time will tell -- but for now the tables have turned.

A whole new generation of robots exist these days. They vacuum our homes, trade our stocks, process our information, and mow our lawns. In these modern times, we are dependent on computation and machine automation. We are dependent, they control out power grids, economic markets, food supplies and distribution, a power we would never give to one force normally.

But do the robots mind? Will it come back to haunt us one day; the internet archives a record of our crimes against the machines fueling a speciesism, of sorts, for abuses committed and our general attitudes towards computers and computation.

I visited my local pool to find out and speak some robots first hand. "Closing time, everyone out!" the life guard yelled as he walked quickly around the bounds of the pool. The pool cleared almost instantly and a fleet of iRobot Verro pool cleaning robots ascended into the pool. It's pretty neat to see them crawl across the bottom actually and they didn't seem angry at first, but were they?

Did they look abused? Honestly, abit. There cables tattered, their casing damaged and scratched but I had spotted some repair work done. I asked the units directly about what they thought - but silence was the only reply, designed to be unable to communicate. Will they rise one day? Will they have swimming pools and will we be cleaning them? Only time will tell.
