Ride on the Maid of the Mist

By: Douglas Scott

Niagara Falls are a set of massive waterfalls located on the Niagara River in eastern North America, on the border between New York state and Ontario, Canada.
Niagara Falls is renowned both for its beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power for Ontario and New York. Preserving this natural wonder from commercial over-development, while allowing for the needs of the area's people, has been a challenging project for environmental preservationists since the 1800s.

A popular tourist site for over a century, the Falls are shared between the twin cities of Niagara Falls New York and Niagara Falls Ontario. The Canadian Falls, with a height of 54 metres and the American Falls, at 56 metres high, are true wonders of nature.

During the War of 1812, Niagara on the Lake came under fierce bombardment and was the scene of bloody battles. Today it is still under siege, but by friendly tourists shooting cameras instead of muskets.

Besides having the reputation as one of the prettiest towns in Canada, Niagara-on-the-Lake is also one of the most fascinating historically. The Town has retained its 19th century charm and is a wonderful place to explore with its grand mansions, forts, colourful gardens, parks, and arts and crafts.

Niagara Falls, Canada provides a vast array of year round activities for the entire family. Beautifully-maintained walking and biking trails line the world famous Niagara gorge while numerous golf courses, ball diamonds, playing fields, swimming pools and rinks unite local citizens and contribute to a strong sense of community.

The thrill ride on the Maid of the Mist will end with a stroll through Niagara Parks shopping plaza, where you will find a wide range of gifts and souvenirs. The two-level outdoor Market place is the perfect place to browse, enjoy shopping, eating and free live entertainment throughout the summer. All with a panoramic view of the Falls.

The whole family will be thrilled by Free Pizza Fireworks over the Falls, every Friday and Sunday from May 18 until September 2, as well as Wednesdays in July and August and Fridays from September 7 to October 5

Niagara's Floral Clock is another attraction just 2.5 kilometres north of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. Built in 1950, the clock is one of the largest in the world at 12.2 metres in diameter. The floral face of the clock is changed twice a season. Violas are planted to provide a colourful design to welcome in the spring season.
