Car and van leasing company Kudos Vehicle Leasing review MINI's iconic diesel hatch

Newly updated, this entry-level diesel One D retains its sporty instinct and is much better looking and cheaper to run. Sporting a diesel badge, the new MINI fills a gap in the range, but does the driving experience retain the fun factor of its petrol siblings?

The MINI One D is the lower-powered version of the new 1.6-litre BMW cultured diesel engine that has replaced the previous engine in the MINI range, producing 89bhp and 159lb ft of torque.

These are competitive outputs, but the new turbo diesels most impressive stats are its 74.3mpg combined fuel economy and CO2 output of just 99g/km, placing the MINI One D in the lowest tax band - adding a little extra appeal to a car that's already highly in demand.

The eco-friendly One D achieves such impressive figures thanks to a host of measures built in to improve efficiency. Stop/start, brake engine regeneration and a gearshift indicator all help to save fuel and cut down the amount of CO2 the car is likely to emit. New gadgets, colour schemes and 16" alloy wheel designs are on the cards too.

A handful of new clever quality options are also now on the list, including adaptive headlights, black headlamp reflectors and MINI Connected, which allows you to hook up your iPhone to the car via a slot inside the centre armrest and listen to online radio stations via the Web Radio function.

Despite its lower outputs, the One D has enough aggression and speed to avoid leaving its drivers frustrated and hardcore MINI fans will be pleased to hear the improved model has retained that legendary 'Go-Kart' handling. As a result, carrying speed from corner to corner won't be a problem and the One D is as much fun to drive as any of the lower-powered MINIs - worthy of its accolade as most people's favourite small car.

Its performance is equally impressive with 62mph being achieved in 11.4 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 115mph. These aren't figures designed to excite racing drivers, but with crisp and responsive steering you can drive it with some gusto and with the knowledge that you can cover more miles between fills.

Car leasing and van leasing specialists Kudos Vehicle Leasing has released a current rate of 185 per month (terms and conditions apply). To find out more about the Mini One range, please visit kudosvm.com or call 08458 336633.
