Resin Based Surfacing Explained

Resin Based Surfacing Explained

By:

Resin based surfacing is still a relative newcomer on the DIY and building market. Significant advances in polymers and epoxy resins have been made over the past few decades and now, the price is reasonable too. However, despite this, many people are still not aware that resin based surfacing is available to them.

The surfacing is made from decorative gravel being glued with a transparent resin to an existing solid surface. The solid surface needs to be properly prepared and clean. The base also needs to be what is known as monolithic, which means that it should have few, if any, joints. There are then two methods of laying the two components resin bound and resin bonded. Both methods will set in less than an hour so need to be laid by approved workmen or skilled DIY enthusiasts.

The resin bound surfacing method involves the aggregate and resin being thoroughly mixed together and then spread over the base by hand using screeding bars and trowels. The correct thickness of the mixture can be laid this way.

The resin bonded method involves laying the resin over the base and then scattering the aggregate over the setting resin.

Resin based surfacing has applications in both the domestic and commercial markets. Commercially it is great for bike and bus lanes and for brightening up municipal areas. Companies can have their logo on the surfacing and complete their identity of their office or factory space.

For residential use, the surfacing can be used on pathways, outdoor play areas and driveways. It can even be used indoors in conservatories or kitchens.

There are many benefits of choosing resin based surfacing for both residential and commercial customers. It is quick drying so can be used very soon after laying, the finished surface is UV stable and resistant to oil spills, bespoke designs are possible, there are hundreds of colours to choose from, it is quick to lay, and the surface has a long life span.
