Researching Franchise Opportunities

By:

In these times of financial difficulty many are considering their future. Often we are pushed forward by the impulses of being made redundant, ambition or even retirement preparation and considering franchise business as a step in the right direction. Clearly self employment through franchising is right for some and not for others.

The tips following are a guide to assist you in your search for the right franchise for you. The tips will help you decide if in fact a franchise business is right for you.

1. Decide what it is you enjoy doing and what your strengths are. Deciding on a significant lifestyle move will usually work best when your work activity revolves around doing what you do best and your interests.

2. Speak to your family and explain your thoughts about wanting to build your own business. Its important that those close to you that will be most affected by any change in your employment status are clear on your reasoning. Be sure that those close to you will support you in providing both emotional and financial support if needed.

3. Recognise that running any business is not an easy ride and can have its ups and downs. Happy franchise business is all about replicating proven best practise so this helps to reduce the downs and makes the most of the ups. You can see why its so important that its necessary to follow a system that has been tried and tested.

4. Start your research online by visiting franchise directory sites and franchise exhibitions where you can research information about franchising and genuine franchise business options that are of interest to you.

5. Make an appointment to visit the franchise companies that are of most interest to you. Meet the key people that would support and provide training to you. Do you get on well with them? Can you see yourself working with them? Does the visit create confidence in you?

6. Ask for contact details of their franchisees. Chat with them and ask about their experiences. Ask questions such as, are you happy with the franchise? Do you make a profit? What support do you get? Has the recession affected your business sales or profits? Knowing what you know, if you were me would you buy the franchise?

7. Having completed your research, identify which franchise opportunities are of real interest to you. Draw up a short list of options.

8. It is vital now to speak to a lender. Ask the bank for their opinion of the franchises on your short list. The banks keep their own records of all franchise businsses known to them. From this information you can get insight into the banks opinion of your preferred options.

9. Often you will need to borrow money to start a proven franchise and for this banks may lend up to 70%. This is because over 90% of UK franchisees run their businesses at a profit according to the British Franchise Association National Franchise Survey which gives the banks a lot of confidence to lend to franchise start up owners.

10. Finally you will need to look closely at the franchise contract from the system you have identified to move forward with. This document rules the agreement to trade between the franchisor and yourself. Consulting a British Franchise Association accredited lawyer is highly recommended.

After completing the above steps you should be well enough informed to decide which franchise is right for you. It will then fall to you and the franchisor to sign contracts, pay fees, book in for training and agree on your franchise business launch programme.

Take your time, find the right franchise for you and then work hard with your franchisors and customers support to build your own successful business.
