Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, an eye, ear and throat specialist and a surgeon, brought reflexology to the United States in 1913. He called it zone therapy based on how he divided the body into ten vertical zones that corresponded to reflexes on the hands and feet. He documented his findings on his own reflexology chart.

The method of Dr. William H. Fitzgerald was further developed by Eunice D. Ingham, a nurse and physiotherapist, from the 1930s to the 1940s. It was during this stage that the current term reflexology was crafted. Ingham completed the reflexology map by finding reflexology points corresponding to all body parts not only on hands and feet but also on the ears. Modern day reflexologists mostly use the methods and reflexology points developed by Ingham.

A reflexology session today is preceded by an in depth interview conducted by the reflexologist. This is when the specific complaints of the patient are elicited. The reflexologist knows the pertinent questions to ask in order to form a more complete picture of the patients condition. This is the basis of the treatment to follow. Any pains felt by the patient during the actual reflexology session will also identify any existing weaknesses, imbalances and illnesses.

In order to apply the required pressure properly on reflex points, reflexologists use their fingers, knuckles and other implements like rounded sticks and rollers that could be made of wood, marble or metal.
