By:

Though the federal government is saddle with the responsibility of adjusting the federal minimum wage rate periodically with labor law posters reflecting such adjustments, various states have to adjust their own minimum wage rate based on conditions in their states relative to federal government minimum wage rate.

The states of Arizona and Florida always keep pace with the periodic adjustment of federal minimum wage as reflected in their states labor law posters. With the increase in the federal government wage rate to $7.25 per hour effective from July 24, 2009, the states of Arizona and Florida increases their minimum wage from $6.90 to $7.25 per hour effective January 2009 and $7.21 to $7.25 per hour effective July 2009 respectively. The increases are reflected in the Arizona labor poster as well as the Florida labor law poster for the benefit of all concerned.

While the federal minimum wage provisions are dealt with in the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA), the states also have their own minimum wage laws. The federal minimum wage covered nonexempt employees only, though in the cases where there are differences between the federal and state minimum wage rates and the employee is subject to both laws, the higher wage rate of the two will be paid to the employee.

Despite the current federal minimum wage rate of $7.25, the states of Arizona further increases their minimum wage from $7.25 to $7.35 per hour effective from January 1, 2011. Likewise the state of Florida also increases it minimum wage to $7.31 per hour effective from June 1, 2011.

An analysis of past minimum wage postings of the states of Florida and Arizona shows that the two states are always increasing their minimum wage rates and updating their labor law posters in conformity with periodic increases on the federal side. The Florida labor law posters shows various increases in the states minimum wage to $6.67 per hour in 2007, then to $6.79 per hour from January 2008, and finally the present rate of $7.25. Likewise the Arizona law labor posters also reflected the increases in the states minimum wage rate from $6.75 in 2007 to $6.90 per hour in 2008, and later $7.25 in 2009 which is finally at $7.35 per hour as at January 2011.

The periodic increases of the minimum wage by the two states can be match to the periodic increases of the federal minimum wage rate over the same timeline. The federal minimum wage increases from $5.15 to $5.85 per hour in 2007, then to $6.55 in 2008 and $7.25 per hour in 2009.
