Refinish Your Floors As Part Of Your Home Renovation

By:

Floors are obviously a critical part of any house. For people with wood floors, issues with stains that are more common with carpeted floors are less of a problem. But on the other hand, wood floors have their own set of problems to deal with as well. Heavy use can lead to large numbers of scratches over time, and to keep your wood floors looking good, you will have to occasionally refinish them. This can be done conveniently during your home renovation projects. Here are a few tips for making sure your refinishing job goes well.

First of all, you have to prepare your surface. Start by examining the floor to find the most badly scratched areas. Then, move out all of your furniture. You may be able to simply move your furniture to another room, but if youre redoing your whole home you may need to find another place to put everything you have in your home. It may be a good idea to look into finding a storage space for all of your things, or if you have cooperative friends with extra room you may have to ask them the favor of holding on to your stuff for a while. If youre refinishing your floors as part of a larger project, your contractor may be able to help you find a place to store your furnishings.

Now its time to prepare the surface of the floor for refinishing. In many cases, you will need to sand the surface down a bit. For larger floors, this involves getting a larger sander. Such sanders often have circular sanding surfaces and are in many cases mounted on larger sanding units that allow you to stand above the wood floor and cover a larger area more quickly. Sanding creates a relatively even surface to be covered by the wood finish. Sanding wood to add finish, as well as other substances such as primer or paint, is a useful technique to be used later in your home renovation project as well.

Once the surface is properly smoothed down, you will then need to actually apply the finish. A good finish will actually work to fill in the minute grooves and indentations on the surface of the wood, leaving a relatively smooth surface on top. It also helps to protect the wood underneath from rotting, and in addition gives the surface up top a nicer, shinier look. There are a wide variety of finishes, and the right one for your wood will depend on the type of wood your floor is made of as well as the look you ultimately want your floor to have. There are various other ways you can cover your floor, such as stains and varnishes, which will give your floor a distinct look. These may also come in handy as you complete more of your home renovation project.
