Records Regarding A Canopy Day Bed

The history of the Canopy Day Bed starts in the medieval times and has progressed to the present. The story is that, in those times, peasants lived in houses with straw of thatch roofs which allowed pigeons and other animals to come through and roost on the wooden supports. This caused droppings to fall on their beds and sometimes on their heads.

To omit the possibility of this unwanted muck getting on and into a bed coverings a post was put up at each bed corner and a sheet or other material tied to the posts. This made a cover, called a canopy, which protected what was below. Royalty and others of high rank often had to sleep in the same room with servants or others so side curtains were added to the canopy for privacy. The combination of canopy and curtains kept the occupants much warmer.

Over the years, the canopy beds were developed into beautiful pieces of furniture, which were found in the finest homes. Designers added to the picture by creating blankets and other accessories that matched the canopy. It became a matter of higher society to have this type of furniture in one's home and considered as being in with the style of the day.

Remains of different types of day beds have been found at archeologist's digs. They have been called many different names including Chaise Lounge in the Victorian Era. These beds had one objective, to look like presentable furniture during the day and act as a bed at night.

Combining the concepts of a canopy and a day bed has resulted in the Canopy Day Bed that is on the market today. There are, presently, a large number of styles and some bear little resemblance to the original canopy and daybed that, when put together, are known by this name. Designers and manufactures have taken the these concepts and made an entirely new item.

The base size of many of today's these beds is usually that of a large sofa rather than a twin bed as the regular day bed was. As a result, it fits in very well as a piece of furniture rather than a bed in disguise. The majority have the four posts but in various sizes and designs.

The canopy can be the same size as the base or very narrow, just covering part of it. It can be made of sheer and fancy material, heavy material such as leather or even metal. This depends on the bed's design and construction.

The Canopy Day Bed, today, is designed in many different styles. They can have a covering (representing a canopy) that looks like a clamshell, fastened at the back edge and providing a solid covering over the bed. This can be closed during the day giving the appearance of a completely different type of furnitur. This type is usually made of metal. Others have a canopy of lacy material. Whatever style is chosen they are designed today to fit in with any room's decor and provide a convenient place for an extra guest to sleep, take a personal nap or just use as an extra piece of furniture when more seating space is needed.
