Recommendations For Very Fun Board Games

By:

Several years ago, some neighbor friends of ours invited us over for a game night. This was our first introduction to what we now refer to as serious games. No, these aren't games that require you to have a serious demeanor, but games that take a bit of time to learn the rules. When learned, these games are extremely fun. The first one we were introduced to is called Settlers of Catan. This game is played on a board constructed from hexagonal tiles representing different types of land. This allows the game board to be different for every game. Once the island is created, number pieces are placed on each of the tiles, numbering from one to twelve and representing different possible rolls of the dice.

The object of the game is to be the first to reach a pre-determined number of points. Points are collected buy building settlements and cities using resources obtained by the different types of land on the island. The trading of resources and other aspects of this game make it very strategic and fun. Two expansions that I also give a high recommendation to are Seafarers of Catan and Cities and Knights of Catan. These expansions packs allow for larger maps, more rules and parts, and are great.

Another game that we have grown to love is called Carcassonne. One main reason my wife and I like this game, is that it has similarities to Settlers of Catan, however, can be played with only two people. It is a little different, in that the map is made throughout the game and points are accumulated by placing the people on four different areas; roads, cloisters, cities, and farms.

Blokus is another game that we really enjoy, it doesn't require as much to learn, but certainly takes a bit of getting used to before you can develop your strategy. It brings to mind a memory of the video game Tetris, but is played on a plastic platform with four different colors of pieces representing four different players. For two or three players to play, they can either rotate turns on an alternate color, or play with two colors each.

Finally, I want to introduce you to a game called Battlelore. Now this game is intense. I have played it several times, and the setup alone can take well over an hour. It is for the die hards, that is for sure.
