Recognizing When Depression Is A Problem

By:

Depression can be a debilitating disorder. Most people have never seen it full-blown, which sometimes leads them to believe that its a less serious problem than it truly is. People who suffer severe depression may be withdrawn and moody, as you might expect, but they may also appear as if nothing is wrong at all. Depression is a disorder that makes people feel isolated and, sometimes, that inability to reach out to those around them becomes a particularly dangerous manifestation of the disorder. It may, at some point, prevent them from asking for help when they need it most. Or it may do the same to you.

Its completely normal to be depressed sometimes. Life, bluntly stated, is full of things that any individual with a healthy amount of sensitivity would find depressing. Depression becomes an issue, however, when those blue feelings never end. Some of the symptoms include:

>> Social withdrawal

>> Constant sorrow

>> Unprovoked crying

>> Irrational anger

>> Joylessness

>> Lessened appetite

>> Insomnia

>> Suicidal ideation

In an individual who suffers from depression, these feelings may not relate to reality in any way. A depressed individual never really has a good day and never really feels truly happy. This is a disorder, and it can be treated.

There are different types of therapy that are used to treat depression. Cognitive therapy concentrates on the thoughts. By confronting, understanding and disempowering depressing thoughts, sufferers are sometimes able to vastly lighten their burden. Depression is not a logical way of thinking, though depressed people will often maintain that theyre just being realistic about the negative nature of the world. By learning new coping skills and new ways to address your feelings, you can sometimes change your thought patterns in ways that alleviate many of the symptoms and miseries of depression.

Some depression is situational. For example, its fairly common for people to report feeling depressed during the winter. If you live in Pittsburgh, PA, you may find yourself facing a lot more dark and dreary days than someone who lives in Acapulco and this may affect your mood. Other forms of depression accompany substance abuseor withdrawal from itand sometimes people become depressed as a result of constant stress, such as while in college. There are many reasons that people suffer this disorder and some therapists concentrate on addressing these causes as a major part of their therapies.

There are some medications that are used in the treatment of depression. Therapy still has enormous value when these medications are used. While medication may be able to correct chemical imbalances, they cannot teach new coping skills or help you identify the parts of your personality that may be contributing to your depression. Therapy centers on revealing these aspects of your life and in teaching you new ways to deal with the stresses that may be bringing you down. Depression can be overcome and is nothing to be afraid of. Getting help, however, is the most important part of recovering.
