Recognizing Patterns In Bipolar Disorder

By:

For someone that suffers from bipolar disorder, coping with extreme mood swings and the aftermath of these is the hardest part. Initially their moods may seem unpredictable and erratic but if they can learn to recognize certain triggers and patterns of their various moods it may help to prevent or diminish them. Along with bipolar disorder treatment, medication and therapy this kind of self-awareness can make having this disorder much easier to handle. Mood swings may be difficult or impossible to eliminate completely but with enough time you can understand how to cope with them the best that you can.

Not all episodes of mania or depression have a certain trigger but when you look at patterns over time you may find that certain situations or events lead to a mood swing. Sometimes specific things like holidays or stressful times at work can lead to an episode. Some people even notice that their moods seems to shift along with seasonal changes such as being depressed in winter or manic in summer. Another trigger could be physical discomfort like lack of sleep or poor nutrition can also contribute to mood swings. Triggers can also stem from personal experiences such as a traumatic event in the past. A situation that mirrors this event in some way can lead an episode of mania or depression. Being fully aware of your personal triggers can help you avoid experiencing them as often or with as much intensity.

Aside from knowing particular triggers it can also be helpful to understand the length and characteristics of your mood swings. Do they usually last a certain amount of time? Is there any of your behavior that is particularly destructive? Taking note of patterns when your mood swings do occur and knowing what to expect can help you figure out better ways of dealing with them. When you receive bipolar disorder treatment your therapists can provide ideas for alleviating some of the symptoms of your episodes. This can make living life with this disorder much easier to manage so that you can still enjoy positive experiences and not be weighed down by your moods.
