The teen years can be difficult for some young people for a variety of reasons. While all teens may have occasional feelings of sadness or bad moods, some will develop serious depression. The most serious consequence of depression is the risk of suicide. Parents and teachers can help a teen if they recognize the signs of teen suicide.

There are a number of reasons teenagers may become depressed. Some teens may feel pressure from their peers to fit in. Many teens are dealing with adult issues, such as sexual relationships and alcohol use. The pressures and stress may become too much for a teen to handle and they may not know how to ask for help. This can lead to depression and eventually suicide.

Signs of depression and suicide vary, however there are certain behaviors to recognize. A change in sleeping habits, such as insomnia or sleeping all the time may be a sign. Withdrawing from friends and family and a loss of interest in most activities may also indicate a problem.

A teen may start to complain of physical problems, such as a lack of energy or headaches. The teen may no longer pay attention to his or her appearance and neglect grooming. Parents and friends may notice a change in personality, such as becoming angry quickly. Additional sign to recognize include, a drop in school grades, weight loss, and negative statements about themselves.

Once a teen has made the decision to commit suicide he may start to plan it. Giving away personal items may be a sign the teen is planning their suicide. Some teens who decide to commit suicide may suddenly become happy after a period of depression. With the decision made, the teen may feel a sense of relief. This sudden cheerfulness following depression may be a sign a teen is planning suicide.

Some teens may deny they are depressed, others may be open about their feelings. A teen may threaten suicide before they actually make an attempt. All threats of suicide need to be taken seriously.

Although it may be difficult to get some teens to open up and admit their feelings, its essential parents keep the lines of communication open and keep trying. Teens may not even recognize what they are feeling is depression and may not be aware help is available.

Teens who suffer depression need treatment from a mental health professional. Both inpatient and outpatient problems are available specifically for teenagers. Referrals for services may be found through a physician. Suicide prevention hotlines will also be able to provide information on available treatment.
