Recalling The Fun Of Model Railroading

By: Mike Mathews.

A man who once lived in a central Pennsylvania community might have dreamed in his youth about designing model rail roads. His set-up with a large, operating model train sat in a corner of his basement. Using that set-up, he taught his son about the fun of model railroading. He also gave to his older niece fond memories about the fun of model railroading.

Even though the niece no longer keeps in touch with her cousin, she is still very much in touch with the immense interest in model railroads that grew along with her age. She still fondly remembers the time she spent with her uncle in the basement during those days.

That uncle even built in some interesting aspects of central Pennsylvania into his model railroad setup. These were the names of the stations existing in Pennsylvania at that time. The uncle along with his newfound assistant niece discovered some amazing railroad accessories that prominently showed the names of the certain train stations.

All this was accomplished during the era prior to the advent of personal computers. It was around the same time in the 1960s when the audio technologies had started discovering new grounds. It also coincided with the launch of a groundbreaking announcement system in the world of model railroad setups that broadcasted announcements whenever the trains stopped at a particular model train station. This systems launch was successfully done by a famous, and still famous producer of model railroads known by the name, Bachman model trains.

The uncle and train lover found a system that had announcements which included mention of a train station in central Pennsylvania. The imaginary announcer called out to imaginary train passengers the word, "Paoli," a central Pennsylvania city where trains to and from Lancaster stopped.

The uncle was well aware that his lovely niece had visited the Paoli station earlier. Thus, he thought of an idea to surprise his niece by calling her over one day and making her witness the model announcement system calling out the name of the Paoli station. The niece was thrilled beyond expectations to witness that something she had experienced in real life could be replicated in such commendable manner in an imaginary world.

The same girl is now a grown up adult, but she is still to come across a person who so passionately dedicates oneself to the hobby of creating and repairing model railroads, like her uncle did. At one point of time, that uncle of hers stayed within a 5mile distance of an outlet that stocked myriad models of railroads and their accessories.

The uncle now stays in New England. That store which used to stock breathtaking model train accessories has shifted one block north and now sells photography equipments. It was an unusual tryst with destiny when the same niece who had once visited the old train store, checked into the new photography equipment outlet.

As she stepped inside, she recalled how her uncle got her into the fun world of railroads. She was confident that had her uncle been beside her, he would've definitely liked the digital cameras too. There's a good possibility that he might have even bought and placed the digital camera alongside his railroad setup in the basement. He would've also gladly taken photos of his family enjoying the hobby of model railroading.
