Real Designers Are A Dying Breed

By:

A real designer is not merely an experienced user of the design software, they are also of a breed that wishes to express beauty in the understanding of humanity; its lifestyle, communications, history, culture and many more aspects. Read all the graphics design tips you want to stay in top designer shape, but dont forget to always keep your mind open. That is being a real designer.

So you know how to use Adobe Photoshop, have 35 different plugins installed and can make a glossy web 2.0 style button in less than 60 seconds. Great, so you know how to follow a few graphics tutorials. But being a real designer is so much more than mere technical expertise.

A real designer is constantly learning about the world and all of its intricate interactions. You have to understand the minds of people; when you design something, it is mainly from your own perspective of the issue. A designer must view the issue from many perspectives at once, to understand the impact that each design element has upon the particular audience in question. Once you figure out how each individual element will affect a person, you can then chain them together to lead a person to the conclusion that you desire.

Every design element can affect emotions or conjure up a particular theme of memory. By understanding the various histories and cultures around the world, you will be able to evoke particular emotions and memories from the audience of your creations. As a designer grow more confident at pinpointing the most probable stimuli for the desired result, creating a design that truly makes sense becomes second nature. Awkward or unthoughtful designs would then become unlikely.

A real designer will add every element sparingly, so that every addition has a point to it. A graphics effect should never be used for the sake of having one, but instead, should have a strong reason for doing so. Next time you want to add a particular effect, ask yourself if that effect will add positively to the composition, or is it just something mediocre to fill in the gaps.

Dont be bound by the restrictions on the design software. Every piece of software has its advantages and disadvantages. By learning the features and advantages of a wide range of software, you will be able to produce results based on what you visualize in your mind, rather than the straightforward result of the software. After all, it is the imagination in the designer who does the designing, and not the software and its limited functionalities.

Of course having technical knowledge is very important for a designer, but dont just focus on 1 or 2 programs. Aside from the primary software programs of your design, expand your knowledge base by also learning computer programs in other design disciplines. Different software designers will create tools that may achieve the same result, but from different paths or logic. There are many ways of achieving the same result, and by learning the different ways, you can come up with completely new techniques that is not taught in any book. Learn to problem solve by thinking from different angles simultaneously, the human mind is capable of quite a bit.
