Ready, Set Jetters? Go!

For film buffs everywhere, there is nothing more exciting and fulfilling than actually setting foot on the location where their favorite movie has been shot. And the number travelers who have caught up with this trend seem to increase each year. Statistically speaking, the Annals of Tourism Research have recorded an increase of 50% in movie location visits. Most of these frequently-visited locations have appeared in successful movies in the previous years, and now, tourism has skyrocketed to an all-time high. These people, who have the affinity to see the movie locations for themselves and have set a new trend in traveling are now charmingly referred to as set jetters.

In the United States, alone, estimated figures of more or less five million fans opt to spend their holiday vacations on movie set locations. Due to this, a lot of travel and tour companies now offer vacation packages which include movie location as one of their tour destination. This booming source of tourism has prompted the US Department of commerce to set up a million dollar fund for the Youve Seen the Movie, Now Visit the Set campaign.

In New Zealand, the tourism industry has seen a surge of set jetters visiting Peter Jacksons version of Middle Earth from the epic trilogy Lord of the Rings. Similar movie locations such those picturesque places seen from the hit romantic movie Eat, Pray, Love are also witnesses to this kind of visit traffics.
In Europe, set jetters can be spotted flocking towards Dunkurque, France (location for the Keira Knightley-James McAvoys Atonement) and the Belgian City (set for the British black comedy film In Bruges).

The movie Into the Wild , which was based on a real-life story has set a dramatic backdrop of Alaska, hence set jetters has found the location somewhat irresistible to visit, too.

For someone working in the tourism industry, the increase of set jetters is a favorable trend for a countrys economy and travel sector, not to mention getting free publicity. One good way to promote a place for more set jetters is to make sure that the location and its scenic or touristy spots appear in the film and seen in a positive viewpoint. Of course, no self-respecting set jetter would want to visit a place featured on a film as a haven of substance-abusive hordes or where zombies might lurk in the dark crevices of the city. Such may have been the case for Edinburgh (Trainspotting) and London (28 Days Later), respectively. Fortunately, these places are very much visited by tourists who travel to these countries for other reasons.

However, this might not be the case for a tourism officer whose area of responsibility might not have enough tourists during the peak season. Here, set jetters can be very valuable. One might not be a big fan of hobbits or the series, but promoting the location well through a popular movie and a tour package later on will definitely help boost tourism and satisfy the appetite of film fanatics and future set jetters.
