Ready, Set, Go Green!

By:

Everyday we hear more and more conversations on companies and individuals about "going green". The biggest road block is that it requires conscious thought and work to save the planet. We must give up old habits and replace them with healthier lifestyles. Every choice we make throughout the day effects us in the long run.

Chemicals are unhealthy and hurt our planet. Materials we use to build with, deplete our precious natural resources. Through simple changes, "going green" can get easier over time. Every step made towards a healthier earth is a positive one. Every person on the planet contributes to greenhouse gasses, which affect the planet. By reducing your carbon footprint, future generations can enjoy a more stable climate.

Trees are extremely important in the environment. They offer shade from the sun and provide homes for many different species of animals. According to the International Society of Arboriculture, trees moderate our climate, improve air quality, conserve water, and harbor wildlife. While some trees are grown specifically for our use, many items made from trees are placed into our landfills across the country and wasted. Some companies also contribute to deforestation of our planet. They cut down trees and use the land for commercial use and do not replant trees.

Many of these items can be recycled instead of being placed in the landfill. Recycling helps conserve resources. One inexpensive way to recycle is by using reclaimed lumber. Reclaimed lumber is that which has been used in other projects, such as decks, houses, furniture and other items. This wood is taken apart and reused to create a new item, such as park benches, playground equipment and picnic tables.

Another, more expensive alternative is through recycled plastic lumber. The long-term costs eventually even out because recycled lumber has a much longer life and does not need to be replaced or repaired as often. This type of lumber is made from post-consumer waste, such as plastic bottles, milk jugs, old tires and grocery bags.

Some of the most popular products that are made from recycled plastic lumber are park benches, picnic tables, decks and trash receptacles. According to the National Park Service, these items are usually infused with dies during manufacturing so they do not need to be painted. They are water resistant and can withstand heavier loads.

Begin by replacing your the park benches and picnic tables on your playground with recycled materials. You can purchase recycled plastic lumber at most home improvement stores and you can also purchase playground equipment made from recycled materials. Many items can be pre-ordered to obtain the finish that you would like.

Along with using recycled products, teach children to plant trees and start a backyard garden. This will help children appreciate life and the time that goes into growing each tree. They will have a greater respect for trees that are cut down. Allow the child to take care of the tree each year and watch it grow. Explain each stage of growth and then talk to your child about how quickly the tree dies when it is cut down.
