Built by a group of Dutch scholars in the year 1778 this establishment serves as one of Indonesias top archaeological repositories. Located in Jakarta the museum also known as the Elephant Building boasts historical, archaeological, geographical and ethnological artifacts and collections. However, in 1862 the government of Dutch India decided to build a new museum which was used as a house, office and a place to preserve its collections.
The 1862 built National Museum features a grand amount of Greek architecture in its structure and landscaped gardens and statues from different times are seen scattered around the vicinity. One of the museums foremost statues is mounted at the front of the museum; the statue of the Indonesian elephant stands tall at the forecourt. Visitors to the museum will see an abundance of fascinating collections that speak of Indonesian history, tradition and its territory over the many years. Whats more, the establishment offers enthusiastic sightseers extensive floor-to-floor tours and a verbal explanation on each gallery that houses the many artefacts here.
A collection of over 60,000 anthropological and prehistoric artefacts and over 5,000 archaeological collections housed within this fascinating building make its treasures amongst the best in the city. The artefacts seen here are from all parts of Indonesia and Asia. At the museum, some of the richest and finest ensembles are the Stone Sculpture Collection (that includes the largest statue at the museum known as the Adityavarman Bhairava), Ceramic Collections (from China, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Japan), Treasure Rooms (includes charming artefacts, gold and other treasures), Prehistory Collection, Historical Relics and Ethnography Exhibits.
Other collections among many are the textile, numismatics and bronze collections. Sightseers to the museum can also find the Gedung Arca, known as the new wing of the National Museum completed in 2007. This new building consists of seven floors and houses exhibits such as cultural elements, national treasures, ceramics and technology.
