Rap Music Beyond The Superficial

By:

What comes to mind when you think about what Hip Hop music is about? Do you think about the mainstream generic tracks that play on the radio? Are you thinking that Hip Hop is just about the superficial side of life? People that don't listen to Hip Hop that often usually think these things about this wonderful music genre. Actually, many of the best Hip Hop songs are much more meaningful than anything that ever plays on the radio. Most people just don't look below the surface.

If you take a look at what many true Hip Hop fans like to call real Hip Hop, then you will see the big difference between the radio's Hip Hop and the real Hip Hop music. The meaningful music in the genre is usually created by the artists that decide not to try and get on the radio. Instead, they do it for the sake of art instead of the sake of fame. Many of the artists that produce artistic music receive critical acclaim but never reach the ears of many of the Hip Hop radio fans.

If you think about the deepest Hip Hop songs of all time, a lot of them vary on their topics. Many of the most critically acclaimed songs are about family issues, violence, sad stories, or drug addiction and problems. The radio on the music and this style of music seems like a completely different genre. Emcee's express their true feelings and views about experiences and the world. The roots of Hip Hop music show how deep Hip Hop should be.

Some great examples of artist's that produce this kind of music most of the time are Joe Budden, DMX, Nas, Common, Kanye West, and Eminem. Most people will say that Tupac was the deepest rapper that has ever blessed us with music, and it's hard to disagree. Some of the artists I've listed have made their share of radio singles, but overall, their music has a lot of meaning. You may think that some of my choices are wrong due to songs you have heard on the radio. You would have to listen to their albums to get a feel for their musical deepness. That is where the true content resides.

The radio has changed what Hip Hop means to a lot of people unfamiliar with the whole genre. The reason that people believe that Hip Hop is dead is because many more artists are popping up to gain fame and actually have nothing to say. However, just like you don't judge a book by its cover, you can't judge Hip Hop by what the radio chooses to play. Think about that when you start to make irrational conclusions about the whole music genre.
