One of the hardest businesses to run used to be a fleet, or anything that had a fleet running under its name. Not any more. Since GPS got introduced, price wise, its been possible to fit every truck, van and car in a fleet with a vehicle tracking system. Initially those systems were simply there to deter thieves and to make sure that vehicles were going where they were supposed to be going. Early GPS systems were little more than pinpointing devices very useful, but with no real money saving capabilities beyond preventing thieves from wandering off with lorries in the middle of the night.

Like most things invented to make life easier in some way, though, GPS vehicle tracking has moved into a different league. The basis of the technology bouncing a positioning signal off a satellite and reporting back to a central command system involves sending data. Initially that data was just a blip, a simple signal that kept track of where a vehicle was. But, reasoned the vehicle tracking system companies, why not use that data signal to send more information? If you can install something in the vehicle to read its vital signs, that information can go right back to command along with the location.

And so the floodgates opened for a new type of tracking system. These days, tracking systems are capable of telling fleet owners not just where their vehicles are, but what they are doing. What direction they are travelling in, how long they have been on the road without a break, how long they are spending with the engine running but not going anywhere. The combination of this enhanced data with the software led command centre programs allows vehicle tracking system users to build meaningful reports about every aspect of fleet efficiency. And thats where the money starts to get saved.

When you can see how much time your trucks spend idling, you can work out a system that does something about it: and before you know it you are saving significant money on fuel.

When you can see how long your vehicles remain on the road, you can track your drivers adherence to working time directives for long hauls. That means two things: one, you can be sure your drivers are sticking to the rules; and two, that you are able to show due diligence whenever you need to. The existence of your vehicle tracking system prevents your drivers from overstepping the mark and lets you prove that you are keeping tabs on their working hours.

Over time, the information that your central reporting system is able to build up can significantly enhance fleet productivity in every area. New routes can be identified, where a frequent run is repeatedly taking longer than it should. The chances of your drivers using trucks and cars here and there, for personal errands, slim down to none: saving you money on fuel and maintenance.

A vehicle tracking system is much more than an anti theft device. Its like having a fleet manager in every truck and every car.
