Raise Credit Scores - Boost Credit Scores

The Cost of Bad Credit

You can make it through life with bad credit, but it wont be easy. Some of the most unlikely businesses use your credit history to make decisions about your application and the rates you pay. Unfortunately, bad credit has some undesirable consequences.

Higher Interest Rates

Youll pay higher interest rates. Banks that issue credit cards and loans use credit scores as a way of deciding who gets to pay lower interest rates. Borrowers with higher credit scores - those with bad credit - are considered riskier borrowers so they have to pay more to borrow money. If you have bad credit, dont expect to receive the most competitive interest rates.

Higher Insurance

Youll pay higher insurance premiums. You wouldnt think insurance companies had any use for your credit score, but like other unlikely businesses, theyve found a way to weasel credit scores into their underwriting processes. Insurance companies say that people with bad credit file more claims, so if you fit the bill, your insurance rates will be higher than your counterparts with better credit.

Denied Applications

You may not get credit cards or loans at all. Theres a point where bad credit goes from being accepted at higher interest rates to being completely denied for credit cards and loans. That state of bad credit can make life difficult especially when you need to book a hotel or rent a car. Using a debit or check card for these types of purchases is inconvenient. Even that may not work since many car rental businesses are more frequently doing a credit check when you rent with a check card.

Unemployment

You may be turned down for a job. In some industries, especially the financial industry, a credit check is part of the application process. Other employers use your credit history to predict your performance on your job. Unfortunately, bad credit can leave you unemployed. Even if youre already employed, you may be turned down for a promotion or raise if you have bad credit.

Security Deposits on Services

You may pay security deposits. Service providers like the electric, cable, and cell phone companies, have a practice of checking credit before extending service to you. If you have bad credit, you may be turned down for service all together. Or, you could have to front a hefty security deposit before you can have services established in your name. The good news is that you can typically get your security deposit back after a certain period of timely payments.

Not only does bad credit make life inconvenient, it also gets expensive. The best way to avoid the costs of bad credit is to start working to improve your credit and raise credit scores.
