Mahanadi, one of the principal rivers in Central India flows through the District of Raipur, east of Raipur City. Founded in the Fourteenth Century, Raipur has grown to a city of over 600,000 people. it is the largest city in the state of Chhatisgarh. Newer Areas of Raipur are being developed scientifically and in a planned fashion in a satellite suburb named Naya Raipur (New Raipur).

Durg and Bhilai are two sattelite suburbs of Raipur that are large and famous Industrial Hubs. Raipur is one of Indias largest iron markets with more than one hundred and seventy steel rolling mills, one hundred and seventy sponge iron units, over two hundred steel plants, and over seventy ferro-alloy plants in and around the city.
