If you are a smoker, then no doubt you have been wondering whether or not you should drop your habit and do away with your nicotine addiction. You may be feeling pressure from friends and family members who do not like the fact that you smoke. You may be concerned for your health after noticing that your breath is shorter than it used to be and that it is becoming more difficult for you to carry out tasks that used to take you no effort at all. Or maybe you just want to quit because smoking was nothing more than a phase for you, like teenage rebellion, and it is time for you to leave it behind. No matter what reason you have for quitting smoking, it is no doubt a difficult task to take on, and should not be taken lightly. Here are some tips that should make reaching your goal of a smoke free life that much easier.

The first thing you need to do is get rid of all of your smoking items, like your cigarettes, your lighters, and your ash trays. Just gather them all up and throw them in the nearest trash can and then take the trash out immediately. Do not give them a second thought. This is so you can begin to take out as much temptation to smoke around you as you can. You need to also begin to tell yourself that from this point on you are no longer a smoker.

This is very important, as it is one of the things that is necessary if you plan to get yourself out of the mentality of a smoker. If you cannot get out of the mentality of being a smoker, then you will never be able to really quit. You will only be able to hold off cravings for a little while until you give in again and light up. You need to be a little tough on yourself in order to break that mentality, but do not beat yourself up if you backslide. After all, you are only human.

It is important to have an incentive for yourself. For example, reward yourself for the time you spent not smoking. Just as long as the reward is not a cigarette, that is. There are numerous mental exercises you can do to keep yourself from smoking, and they do not work for everybody, so it is up to you to figure something out that sticks.
