A lot of avid smokers are well aware of what their habit can do to them. However, they refuse to hear anyone speak about quitting smoking.

All cigarettes contain a little drug that is known as nicotine. Believe it or not, studies have shown that nicotine is actually just as addictive as cocaine and heroin. Not only is the addiction to cigarettes physical, it is also a mental and emotional addiction as well. There are a lot of people that will choose to utilize their cigarettes as a crutch. However, the support system that you obtain from smoking a cigarette is something that you do not need.

Perhaps one of the biggest drawbacks that stop people from quitting smoking are the withdrawal symptoms that follow the act of quitting. Increased mood swings, irritability, nausea, fatigue, and weight gain are just some of the symptoms that smokers will be forced to deal with if they decide to quit. Therefore, in order to ensure that they do not have to deal with these problems they continue to carry on with their habit.

Believe it or not, after you quit smoking there are some immediate changes that occur within your body. Twenty minutes after smoking your last cigarette your blood pressure levels will equal out and your heart functions will begin reacting in the way that they are supposed to. After you have not had a cigarette for 24 hours the amount of carbon monoxide that was once in your body will immediately leave it.

People that have managed to stay on the straight and narrow and have not picked up a cigarette in one year will diminish their chances of coming down with lung cancer or any other serious diseases. Also, whenever you are sick for one reason or another, your sickness will be easier to diagnose.

Quitting smoking can be difficult to do. However, if you have the willpower and the desire to kick the habit it is possible to accomplish this difficult feat.
