Heralded as the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown is an international resort town nestled amid majestic mountains and crystal clear waters of Lake Wakatipu in rugged Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. A large number of people also come to Queenstown to indulge in some white-knuckle death-defying adventure sports opportunities that the resort town is famous for. Whether it's braving the raging rapids of the mighty Kawarau River or leaping off a platform hundreds of metres up in the air with only a bungy cord tied between their legs, Queenstown has always been the place for to adrenaline junkies to satisfy their need for speed.

Even with so many activities to choose from, most people keep returning to the old stalwart that helped kick off the whole adventure tourism industry in Queenstown; bungy jumping. Regarded by everyone who attempts it as an unforgettable experience, the sport has its spiritual home in Queenstown as the resort town is the site of the world's first commercial bungy jumping operations started by New Zealand's own AJ Hackett. Prior to Hackett's groundbreaking endeavour to open up the sport to the masses, bungy jumping was restricted to a few extreme sports enthusiasts experimenting with this emerging phenomenon. Thanks to the pioneering vision of one man, bungy jumping has evolved into a sport everybody can enjoy in a safe and affordable way.

Adrenalin junkies in Queentsown have three amazing bungy jumping sites to choose from. These include the Kawarau Bridge Bungy, the Ledge Bungy and Nevis Bungy, each of which is located in and around Queenstown. The first, Kawarau Bridge Bungy, is the site of the original operation that kicked it all off in the 80s. The Kawarau Bridge jump offers a 43 metre jump that can be taken solo or with a friend. Despite the modest drop, it remains the world's best-loved bungy site with tens of thousands jumpers every year.

The Ledge Bungy has the distinction of being Queenstown's only urban bungy site and is perched 400 metres above city one a specially built runway ledge. Jumpers will experience heart pounding exhilaration as they plunge 47 metres towards the stunning Queenstown landscape below them. The Ledge Bungy jumps can also be attempted in the darkness of night - a first in New Zealand. And finally, there is the Nevis Bungy, the biggest and most hardcore bungy jumping experience in Queenstown. Not for the faint of heart, the Nevis Bungy takes place on a gondola suspended by wire in mid-air over the raging waters of the Nevis River. This jump features an astounding 134 metre drop - an unforgettable experience for those who attempt it.

Last but not least there is the Nevis Highwire Bungy. Regarded as the ultimate bungy jump, the Nevis Highwire boasts an amazing 134 metres metre drop. What's more, the jump takes place off a gondola suspended high above the Nevis River with cable car wires. Not for the faint of heart, this is the jump that makes even seasoned bungy jumpers quake. Conquering the Nevis Highwire Bungy is an experience you will cherish for the rest of your life. This is also the home of the Nevis Arc, the world's highest swing that accelerates you over a river valley in a 300 metre arc.
