Qualifying To Become A Teaching Assistant

By:

Whilst officially you do not need any qualifications to work as a teaching assistant, especially at the lower levels, most schools will not take on someone without some qualifications. It can be hard to work out how to qualify to become a teaching assistant in the UK.

The ridiculous situation now exists whereby the schools will not employ teaching assistants without an NVQ. The people who want to work for them cannot get the NVQ without first having a job. This has created a sort of vicious circle. Fortunately, most education authorities have now understood that this is stupid and are now recommending non-NVQ courses to people who want to become teaching assistants in their area.

Prior to starting a non-NVQ course, it is vital that you check that your local Education Authority will recognise that course. In addition, check with the Authority and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) that the course is recognised by them too.

Complete your officially recognised non-NVQ as soon as you can. You need it for your future job applications to stand any chance of being successful.

Once you are working as a teaching assistant you will be expected to complete the NVQ courses at least to level 3 in order to keep your job. Initially most schools allow their teaching assistants to complete the Support Work in Schools Qualification
(SWiS) course first. It provides a good foundation for the NVQ courses.

You need to bear in mind that working with children is an important job, which should be viewed as a vocation rather than just a job. Over the years, you will need to be prepared to study new methods and acquire new qualifications in order to progress in the field. It is not uncommon for teaching assistants to realise that they are good at teaching and to take a full teaching degree instead. Those that do so, find their work as a teaching assistant invaluable in their new career as a fully qualified teacher.
