Purified Water For Health

Purified Water For Health

By:

If you arent fully aware of the benefits that purified water can have on health, it is probably time you should be. Drinking purified water is a very healthy thing to do and approach to take. Water can be purified in a number of different ways such as by way of filtration, distillation, or reverse osmosis. The following are some of the health related benefits of purified water:

Purification by Filtration versus Distillation/Osmosis

A distinction should be made regarding the way water is purified, because these types of water can be quite different as regards their effects on the body. Filtration is a process in which ordinary (usually municipal) water is put through charcoal or other types of filters to remove toxins and bacteria from water. This process allows minerals to remain in the water and for the water to be clearer of undesirable elements.
Distilled or reverse osmosis water is quite different as regards the purification process. This water goes through processes such as heating and evaporation which remove undesirable compounds but in so doing also remove minerals. This can have undesirable effects on the overall health value of the water. This is discussed a bit further below.

Purification Removes Toxins from Water

One of the main reasons why purified water may be healthier than tap water is that the purification process, if its done correctly, takes toxins like chlorine and fluoride out of the water. These chemicals, while touted as safe by municipal authorities, are not in fact good for you. They have been shown to be fairly toxic and disadvantageous to health, especially over longer spans of time.

Bacteria

The purification process also removes bacteria that may be in municipal water sources. This bacteria level obviously varies depending on the water supply. And if the water is well tested it should not be at a very high level or particularly dangerous. But bacteria free water is likely to be healthier overall if the bacteria are not of the desirable kind.
It should be noted that certain types of naturally occurring bacteria are actually good for health. If these types of bacteria occur in municipal water, filtering them out could be a problem. More on this will be mentioned in the section regarding the disadvantages of certain types of distilled and reverse osmosis water.

Disadvantages Distilled and Reverse Osmosis Water

Contrary to what people may think, distilled or reverse osmosis water is not the best water to consume on a daily basis. In fact it can even have adverse health effects. The fact that minerals that are usually dissolved in water have been distilled out means that the water absorbs minerals very quickly. It absorbs them from the body, potentially resulting in mineral deficiencies. This type of purified water also absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, which makes it acidic. Thus is can cause the body to become more acidic when drunk. It also does tend to purify the body of toxins, and is thus recommended for short term use for detoxification purposes. However daily drinking of this water is not recommended.

Instead of water that has gone through a distillation or reverse osmosis process, people should drink filtered water as their daily water source. This water contains the right mineral balance and is slightly alkaline rather than acidic, so it is best for daily consumption. It leaves minerals in the body or even enriches them, and supports a good acid/base balance.
